On this page you will find additional materials which, I hope, can help you grow, understand the stages of the spiritual life, and feed your prayer life.  I will probably add to these in time.

FIRE WITHIN by Rev. Thomas Dubay.  You can order at Amazon or possibly download the paperback version here:     This ponderous book is a serious study of mystical theology and prayer; while you may want to read it from cover to cover, you can also select areas which seem suitable to your level.

THE FULFILLMENT OF ALL DESIRE by Ralph Martin.  Released in 2006, this classic is “A Guidebook for the Journey to God Based on the Wisdom of the Saints.”  Primary saints cited:  St. Catherine of Siena, St. John of the Cross, St. Teresa of Avila, St. Francis de Sales, St. Bernard of Clairveaux.

INTO THE SILENT LAND – A Guide to the Christian Practice of Contemplation by Martin Laird, O.S.A.  The title says it all.  This little volume published in 2006 is based on the teaching of the Church fathers.  It is thorough and practical, moving and engaging.

ABANDONMENT TO DIVINE PROVIDENCE Jean-Pierre de Caussade. I prefer the translation by  John Beevers.  This classic has been the backbone of my spirituality for many years.  It bears reading often.  You can look also at Soul Food Talk # 5 [presently located on both St. Paul and Living Christ websites].

CONCHITA:  A MOTHER’S SPIRITUAL DIARY  by Mariee-Michel Philipon.  Father Philipon translates Conchita’s Diary.  Again, this book by a Mexican mystic, wife, mother, a founder of an order of priest and religious,  was a great spur to deeper commitment and growth.  The entire book is online here:,d.eXY

NEW AND DIVINE:  The Holiness of the Third Christian Millennium by Hugh Owen.  Based on an examination of the related spirituality of many saints & blesseds, among them St. Theresa of Lisieux, St. Mary Mary Alacoque, St. Louis de Montfort, Blessed Elizabeth of the Trinity, Blessed Dina Belanger, St. Maximilian Kolbe, Servant of God Marthe Robin, and my beloved Archbishop Luis Martin, this remarkable book is truly one for our times.  New ideas, striking inspiration, fuel for the fire within.

PRAYER OF THE HEART by George A. Maloney, S.J.  I have long been attracted to the Jesus Prayer and use it as one of my primary practices.  This book explains the Prayer of the Heart as based on that prayer–in depth.

ABIDING IN THE INDWELLING TRINITY – Divided into short sections, each one a manageable meditation for reflection and prayer, this is a wonderful book savoring every aspect of the mystery of the Blessed Trinity.

TO BE JESUS CRUCIFIED — by Concepcion Cabrera de Armida with Archbishop Luis M. Martinez, a retreat directed by Archbishop Martinez in 1928. I find this book to be a partner book with UNDER THE GAZE OF THE FATHER, as it introduces major themes introduced in the other book.  An astounding book.

UNDER THE GAZE OF THE FATHER by Archbishop Luis M. Martinez.  A more recent discovery, I have acquired this wonderful, mystical book among several of Archbishop Martinez’ writings.  After reaching somewhat of a stalemate after several years of growth, this book stirred the fire within in a totally new way.  Based on a retreat which he directed for Venerable Conchita in 1935.  A companion book:  TO BE JESUS CRUCIFIED, records her retreat with Archbishop Martinez in 1928–where many of the themes were first revealed.

WORSHIPING A HIDDEN GOD – Unlocking the Secrets of the Interior Life – A more reader-friendly version of the spiritual journey, more simply expressed than the ponderous study of the spiritual life and prayer by Father Dubay and Ralph Martin.  Especially if you are trying to live a contemplative life and are having difficulties with faith, dryness, desolation, and aridity, you will find comfort and help here.

ONLY JESUS — A beautiful meditative book on Jesus’ teachings, transformation into Jesus and the inner life of Christ.  Archbishop Luis Martinez commented at one point that this was his favorite book that he had written.

TRUE DEVOTION TO THE HOLY SPIRIT – a book which is becoming a classic, his book has three parts:  Devotion to the Holy Spirit, The Gifts of the Holy Spirit, the Fruits of the Holy Spirit.

Love Crucified:   Actually, I belong to the Love Crucified Community which is a covenant community which follows the spirituality of Archbishop Luis Martinez and especially of Venerable Conchita.  On this site, look for “Simple Path,” []     “A Simple Path to Union with God.”

The Life and Doctrine of St. Catherine of Genoa -Christian Classics Ethereal Library.  Be sure to see this library for many other classics of Catholic mystical theology:
