As I read and pray, I discover meaningful prayers to which I return again and again. I’d like to share some of them with you. (See also Soul Food Talk #2, part 2: Writing Your Own Prayers.)
Dear Jesus, help us to spread Your fragrance everywhere we go. Flood our souls with Your spirit and life. Penetrate and possess our whole being so utterly that our lives may only be a radiance of Yours. Shine through us, and be so in us that every soul we come in contact with may feel your presence in our souls. Let them look up and see no longer us, but only Jesus! Stay with us, and then we shall begin to shine as You shine; so to shine as to be a light to others. The light, O Jesus, will be all from You, none of it will be ours; it will be You shining on others through us. Let us thus praise You in the way You love best: by shining on others, through us. Let us preach You without preaching, not by words but by our example, by the catching force, the sympathetic influence of what we do, the evident fullness of the love our hearts bear to You. Amen.
Cardinal John Henry Newman authored this prayer. The Missionaries of Charity pray this prayer every day after Mass, as did Mother Teresa.
To the Holy Spirit:
In utter emptiness of heart, I wait for Your Wind, Your Fire, Your Living Waters to rush upon me and reveal the Heart of the Blessed Trinity, in Whom I live, move, and have my being!
[derived from Father George Maloney, S.J.]
O my beloved Jesus, simplify everything in the unity of Your Heart in order to plunge the whole universe into the bosom of the Trinity that God be All in all! [derived from Ven. Luis Martinez]
To the Father:
My adorable Father, my beloved Abba, my Heart of hearts, be surfeited with Your Jesus. Be surfeited with the Beloved of Your Heart and Will!
every trace of self-will, self-love, self-indulgence.
Let me burn myself like incense, in all my roughness, before Your Sacred Heart.”
[derived from Ven. Conchita]
PRAYER OF IMMOLATION
Eternal Father, my beloved Abba, through the Immaculate heart of my sorrowful mother, Mary, and in the Holy Spirit,
I offer myself as a sacrifice of thanksgiving and praise,
as a victim of love, “one heart, one will, one Victim” of the Divine Will
for the salvation of souls, the sanctification of all priests, and the glory of the Blessed Trinity.
In Him and with Him, let me live the hidden life of martyrdom of the heart, one with the soledad of my Blessed Mother Mary.
Let me live as a spouse of your Holy Will in communion with You in the sacrament of each moment,
adoring your Divine Will with each beat of my heart, with every drop of my blood, and with each breath.

“Whom have I in the heavens but You? None besides You delights me on earth. Though my flesh and my heart fail, God is the Rock of my heart, my Portion forever.” Ps. 74, 25-26
“And now, Lord, what is there to wait for?
In You lies all my hope.” Ps. 39,8
“Your Will is my heritage forever,
the joy of my heart
I set myself to carry out Your Will
in fullness forever.” Ps. 119 NUN
“This I seek, to gaze on the loveliness of the Lord, and to contemplate His temple.”
VENABLE LUIS MARTINEZ
“Oh Holy Father, oh Adorable Father, through the Immaculate Hands of Mary, the Most Holy Virgin, my Mother, under the impulse of the Holy Spirit, and intimately united to Jesus, Your Son, Immortal Victim,
I give to You today the total gift, and the absolute oblation of myself, abandoning all to Your Sovereign Will, in order that this Divine Will, without asking my opinion, without taking me into account, might do with me and with all that is mine, whatever it pleases.
My only support in making this oblation is Your strength, upon which my nothingness rests.
I give you that which I can now give You, my will, sincere and complete and I cast myself into Your Sovereign Will!”
PRAYER OF VENERABLE MARTHE ROBIN
“Eternal Father, through the divine hearts of Jesus and Mary, and through Your Spirit of Love, I offer you the sacred wounds of Jesus, my Savior, His precious Blood, His adorable face, His priestly and Eucharistic Heart…in union with Mary, and in particular for the souls who are consecrated to You, and for your priests.
I offer You, Jesus, the Eternal Wisdom and Sovereign Good.
Into this purifying, peace-giving, and sanctifying furnace, I cast, O my Father, all Your creatures, that they may be open to regeneration, perfection, and love;
all those who have been led astray, who are doubtful, who are unbelieving; all the poor sinners; and I beg You to receive them, to guard them, to transform them, and to consume all of them in your immense love.
O Eternal Justice of the Sovereign and infinite Holiness of my God, Behold Jesus. Be satisfied by the superabundant merits that He has willed to deposit in me.
Repay Yourself infinitely, recompense Yourself with the Glory You wrested from Lucifer and all his proud legions and later, from wicked and unscrupulous souls.
O inexpressible and incomprehensible Love!
O supreme and infinite Charity, pierce our souls with the all-powerful flames of His Divine Heart!
Eternally receive, without any interruption, relaxation, weakening, or omission, Your Jesus Christ, the Eternal Infinite in Whom I ceaselessly melt away under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, and with Mary my mother, so that all of Your plans of love in the Church and in the world may be perfectly accomplished.
My God, Your silence replies better than the many fervors of my love for You.
Take Jesus, all of Jesus, and deign to read for Yourself in His divine thoughts, the untranslatable characters of fire that Your Spirit of Charity has so deeply imprinted upon my soul and in my whole being, melting into the heart of Your Unity, Your Will forevermore.”
PRAYER OF BLESSED DINA BELANGER
“ O Adorable Trinity, for your greater glory I wish to make use of the riches of the uncreated and incarnate Word.
Be satisfied with Him.
Through His supremely exalted, inexhaustible, and compensating treasures, rejoice in your original plan of creation;
take delight in the restoration of the perfect harmony of all beings with your Holy Will;
satisfy your insatiable desire to give Yourself, and in the name of every creature possible to Your love, receive eternally in return, without interruption or loss, Your Christ, eternal and infinite!”
ANNUNCIATION PRAYER – by Maria Cano
O my God, I firmly believe that You are one God in three divine Persons, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
I believe all that You have taught us,
that we are Your mustard seed, Your hidden force, gathered for such times as these,
in fulfillment of our baptismal promises.
I believe in the power of my hidden life,
joined with my brothers and sisters
and suffered with You, from the tedium of the daily,
to the life and death struggles.
I believe that incredibly
You beseech me to help You
in the sanctification of Your priest sons
and the salvation of souls.
Mary, my mother, the perfect victim of love,
help me to be a good spiritual mother,
and to always follow as you lead us to your Son.
Lord, I believe, help my unbelief.
Please open your hearts fully
to enter into the womb of Mary
and be formed by the Holy Spirit
as God’s hidden victims of love!!
AS I GAZE
As I gaze on my adorable Abba
through your eyes, my Jesus,
I am filled with longing for Him.
The Holy Spirit, that little dove
Who nests in my heart,
groans with the thirst that we be One.
Feed me, my Jesus, lest I die of thirst.
Fill me with the loving gaze
of Your Sacred Heart,
the loving gaze of My Father
who melts me to tears.
THE KISSES OF HIS MOUTH
My Beloved Christ,
Kiss me with the kisses of Your mouth—
—the kiss of Union
—which is the Holy Spirit.
I long to satisfy Your thirst,
—so feed on me, Jesus,
—and drink deeply.
I, too, feed on Your Sacred Heart,
—my precious cup,
—my wine of infinite Love and Immolation.
Our communion is so precious to me, Lord–
—I will it to continue
—in the sacrament of the moment
—as I abandon myself without reservation
—to You, with the Father,
—in the power of the Holy Spirit.
CHIMING AT MY DOOR
I hear You chiming at the door of my heart, My Beloved.
You, I adore in the Eucharist,
You, Eternal Presence, You, Sacred Heart–always my food.
Come, let us have our Communion, Sweet Christ,
You in my heart, Me in Your Heart.
Never leave me, God of my heart.
I belong to You, 24/7— Lord of my life, My Eucharistic King and Savior.
Your Sacrament is my greatest desire—But alas, I am far from You.
Let me eat & drink with You in sweet Communion.
Never leave me.
Never let me leave You.
YOUR WOUNDED HEART
In spirit, I am always kneeling in wonder, in adoration before the Tabernacle.
Your Sacred Heart, wounded by sin, alone and neglected, martyred by love, draws from me immense sorrow—
In sweet communion with your Body and Blood,
Let me suffer all with You, no longer two, but one, in Your sacrifice of love.
SACRAMENT OF EVERY MOMENT
Here You are to feed me once again.
I long to be filled with your Sacramental Presence,
But I find myself far from You.
I turn to Your tabernacle in whatever direction it lies,
In longing, in desire, in hunger, in thirst for your Grace.
You know everything, Jesus; You know that You alone in all the earth delight me.
Let us be one in spiritual Communion, In the sacrament of every moment.
ADVENT & CHRISTMAS
I abandon myself in the fire of the Holy Spirit, to the Father’s Sovereign will.
There, I have eternal access to You, tender child of Bethlehem— I devour Your very sweetness, wanting nothing to come between us, Blessed Child.
Let us have our little communion in the straw, with our loving Mother smiling at us.
Let our Communion never end, my Lord.
What a delight You are to me, my Lord.
I can turn to You at any hour of the day or night, breathe a sigh of love and desire from my heart,
And You fill me with Your sweet Communion.
Come into my heart, Love of my Life, And never leave me.
So am I, my Lord! Drink from my heart, Eat from my substance,
And I will do the same, feasting on Your Love–
One mind, one heart, one will, My divine Victim and Priest of the Father’s Will.
AT THE CROSS
“My food is to do the Will of Him who sent me—“ I know, my sweet Christ.
And my own food is to enter completely into that Love, into a full, spiritual Communion by feeding on Your precious Body & Blood— spiritually through Grace, if not sacramentally.
I want to suffer all with You, No longer two but one in Your sacrifice of Love.
How exhausted You are, My Lord, Left alone with Your unbelievable destiny.
I am weak and poor, but I want to be with You, for You, to receive your bleeding, frightened flesh in Communion.
How I cherish it. All of You in all of me, for time and eternity. How we both cherish it.
You have known from the foundations of the world that I would be here now.
Let me never betray or leave You and the souls You so love.
IN MY DISTRACTION
In my distraction, I sometimes find it hard to focus.
Pierce me with desire, My Lord.
Feed me. I’m Yours.
Never let me get away from You, Heart of my heart.

Prayer After Holy Communion, by St. Padre Pio
Stay with me, Lord, for it is necessary to have You present so that I do not forget You. You know how easily I abandon You.
Stay with me, Lord, because I am weak and I need Your strength, that I may not fall so often.
Stay with me, Lord, for You are my life and without You I am without fervor.
Stay with me, Lord, for You are my light and without You I am in darkness.
Stay with me, Lord, to show me Your will.
Stay with me, Lord, so that I hear Your voice and follow You.
Stay with me, Lord, for I desire to love You very much and always be in Your company.
Stay with me, Lord, if You wish me to be faithful to You.
Stay with me, Lord, as poor as my soul is I want it to be a place of consolation for You, a nest of Love.
Stay with me, Jesus, for it is getting late and the day is coming to a close and life passes, death, judgment and eternity approaches. It is necessary to renew my strength, so that I will not stop along the way and for that, I need You. It is getting late and death approaches, I fear the darkness, the temptations, the dryness, the cross, the sorrows. O how I need You, my Jesus, in this night of exile!
Stay with me tonight, Jesus, in life with all its dangers, I need You. Let me recognize You as Your disciples did at the breaking of the bread, so that the Eucharistic Communion be the Light which disperses the darkness, the force which sustains me, the unique joy of my heart.
Stay with me, Lord, because at the hour of my death, I want to remain united to You, if not by Communion, at least by grace and love.
Stay with me, Lord, for it is You alone I look for, Your Love, Your Grace, Your Will, Your Heart, Your Spirit, because I love You and ask no other reward but to love You more and more.
With a firm love, I will love You with all my heart while on earth and continue to love You perfectly during all eternity. Amen.
